MTI Instruments
1520 Signal Generator

The 1520 Signal Generator is a precision instrument developed to make calibration and testing easier and faster. It generates voltage and charge signals over a wide range of frequencies to make fast work of system calibrations.

OBJECTIVES
Our goal was to redesign the 1510A Signal Generator for more advanced functionality, durability, and a more modern user experience.

OUTCOMES
The new MTI Instruments 1520 Signal Simulator is designed for reliability, performance, and remote operation for testing and calibrating advanced machinery and sensor-driven systems.

Product Audit & Concept Exploration

We began the design process by auditing the existing product and exploring various concepts that would yield a completely new look while integrating the fresh user interface. Through extensive sketching and iterative refinement, we developed a design that met the client’s vision for a competitive and unique signal generator.

Prototyping and Testing

Every product that ends up in a user’s hands must deliver an ergonomic experience. Using 3D Printing, foam, clay, and more we were able to refine the button position and grip shape to enhance user comfort.

User Interface Design

To support users across a range of environments, we designed a clean, high-priority screen layout with quick access to channel modes and data views. Color-coded signal channels—orange and blue—allowed for quick visual differentiation and reduced user error. The UI was built in both light and dark modes to optimize visibility in different settings, from outdoor sunlight to low-light labs or enclosures.

Navigation Prototyping

Working closely with the industrial design team, the UI/UX team refined the button layout and overall navigation flow to reduce physical inputs while maintaining full control of the device’s functionality. Because the device is operated primarily by users wearing gloves, we ensured all key actions could be performed using arrow keys—no touchscreen required. Every stage of the interface was prototyped and tested to validate function, flow, and accuracy throughout the process.

Refinement

We worked with the MTI team to better understand the required CMF, durability, size, and tabletop usability, then worked in new details.

Final Design

The 1520 Signal Generator redefined MTI Instruments product lineup and how they approached usability. A durable plastic shell, rubber bumper, and protected interaction points will keep this handheld in use for years.

Production

Capable of handling any situation and environment, the 1520 project was a resounding success. It won a LEAP award - recognizing the engineering and intuitive user design and interface.

MTI Instruments soon went on to be acquired by VITREK based on the successful development of this product and their other successful ventures.
